Four stories are driving conversation in Vietnam right now: a home-grown film that keeps beating imported blockbusters, a pageant result that got a lot of praise at home, the country's first national Culture Day, and the fastest quarterly growth in years. Here is what happened, with the numbers and dates.

This is a news roundup, not a ranking. Each item below lists what happened, why it matters and what to watch next. Figures come from Vietnamese and English-language news reports published in October 2026 and may be revised.

1. The Journey of Heroes keeps climbing the box-office charts

What happened: The film opened on September 25 and was still number one at the Vietnamese box office 17 days later. VietnamNet reported that it passed $15.4 million by October 11, which puts it seventh among the highest-grossing Vietnamese films ever. Earlier, Viet Nam News reported more than VND230 billion in revenue and over 2.5 million viewers by October 3.

The thriller is directed by Toni Dương Bảo Anh. It follows a man (played by Steven Nguyễn) trying to rescue his younger sister from human traffickers near the southwestern border. The story involves a scam compound. The film runs 135 minutes and is rated 18+, and its producers have said they are exploring a version for viewers aged 13 and over.

Why it matters: It is one of only four Vietnamese films to pass the VND230 billion mark in 2026, according to Viet Nam News. It also adds to Steven Nguyễn's record: his previous film, Red Rain, took about $27.6 million, so his two consecutive releases now total more than $38.6 million.

What to watch: The producers expect VND300 billion soon. Whether a 13+ cut appears will decide how far the film can still grow.

2. Emoura Phạm finishes fifth at Miss Grand International 2026

What happened: At the final in Bangkok on October 10, Vietnam's Emoura Phạm placed fourth runner-up, which is fifth place overall. Jihan Dimack of Tanzania won the crown. Phạm is of Vietnamese-British background and has an acting degree from a US university. She won Miss Grand Vietnam 2026 on July 31, beating 29 other contestants.

Why it matters: Her speech on ending war and conflict started with three seconds of silence, which she described as "the sound of peace." She also pitched a "fifth B", for bridge, linked to her family's project to build community bridges in the Mekong Delta. Local coverage described fans praising her confidence and communication.

What to watch: Her next projects have not been covered in the reports used here.

3. The first Vietnam Culture Day is on November 24

What happened: Vietnam will hold its first national Culture Day on November 24, 2026. It follows the Politburo's Resolution 80-NQ/TW on cultural development, dated January 7, 2026. On October 14, Deputy Prime Minister Phạm Thị Thanh Tra told a nationwide online conference to prepare a week of events from November 18 to 24 centred on national unity. Cultural spaces such as museums, libraries and theatres are asked to extend their opening hours.

Hà Nội began its celebrations on October 3 with a launch at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism in Đoài Phương commune. The capital's main programme runs November 21–24 around Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the Lý Thái Tổ flower garden, with more than 4,000 artisans, artists and performers.

What's on in Hà Nội:

  • Nov 21: Opening at the King Lý Thái Tổ monument with the Thăng Long Drum Festival and a heritage parade.
  • Nov 22: A 3D mapping show on Turtle Tower (Tháp Rùa), combining projection, lasers, sound and a musical fountain.
  • Throughout: Water puppetry, silk and craft displays, traditional theatre, costume try-ons and virtual reality exhibits at venues including Đồng Kinh Nghĩa Thục Square and Tràng Tiền Plaza.
  • Nov 23–24: Performances and folk games in neighbourhoods across the city.

Why it matters: Culture Day is meant to become an annual date. Other provinces have been asked to organise their own events, so expect local programmes outside Hà Nội too.

What to watch: Opening hours and any free-entry offers at museums and heritage sites should be announced closer to the date. Check each venue's official page.

4. Vietnam's economy grows 9.95% in Q3

What happened: The National Statistics Office reported on October 3 that GDP grew 9.95% year on year in the third quarter. Growth for the first nine months was 9.01%, after 8.15% in Q1 and 8.81% in Q2.

By sector in Q3, industry and construction grew 12.50%, services 9.54% and agriculture, forestry and fisheries 4.21%. Exports rose 23.27% and imports 28.75%. For the first nine months, the fastest-growing localities were Quảng Ninh (12.54%), Hà Tĩnh (12.36%) and Hải Phòng (12.08%).

Why it matters: Industry and construction contributed just over half of the Q3 gain in value added, with services adding most of the rest.

What to watch: Q4 data, due in early January, and whether imports, which grew faster than exports in Q3, keep outpacing them.

Practical tips

  • Plan Hà Nội trips for November 21–24. The area around Hoàn Kiếm Lake is the main venue, so expect crowds and book hotels early.
  • Check cinema ratings. The Journey of Heroes is rated 18+.
  • Follow official sources for Culture Day. Programmes outside Hà Nội will be set by each province.
  • Treat early box-office totals as estimates. Outlets report in VND and USD at different dates, so figures differ slightly.
